A red carpet passes between marble columns into the vast, redwood-paneled lobby. Here, St. Francis staff has welcomed a long and illustrious list of VIP’s, including Emperor Hirohito, Queen Elizabeth II, Mother Teresa and numerous U.S. presidents.
Guest rooms and suites total 1,200 since the hotel added on a 32-story tower in 1972, effectively doubling its capacity. Beginning in 1996, two renovations totaling $110 million have restored the original façade and replaced all guest room carpets, furniture and bedding. The elevator ride to the top floors of the hotel offer magnificent views of the Union Square area.
Guests staying in the historic main building still enjoy traditional, early-1900’s rooms featuring high ceilings and crown moldings. Tower guest rooms offer a more contemporary décor with Empire-style furnishings and broad views of the city above the eighteenth floor.
For elegant dining, Michael Mina restaurant serves refined American cuisine backed by a selection of over 1,500 wines. Diners wishing a more casual setting may choose the historic, wood-paneled Oak Room with its seasonal comfort food and California wines. A coffee bar, Caruso's, offers espresso and light dining fare throughout the day.
